Before the Dark Death
It could have been the air of the city in the sky, the clouds that made it hard to see any light, or the sounds of the children of the flies. It was a dark night, one perfect for murder...

He had seen her at the bar, standing next to an old woman whose eyes were as wide and empty as the bottom of a bottle. She was tall, slim, dressed in black trousers and white silk shirt. Her long, brown hair shone like oiled silk against the blackness of the room. The old woman was drinking vodka and lime; the young girl was drinking red wine and smoking a cigarette. When he saw her take out a pack of cigarettes from her breast pocket and light one with the flame of her lighter, he felt his heart quicken in his chest, like when you know something bad is about to happen and all you can do is wait and hope it passes soon enough before it gets too late. He didn't feel comfortable looking at her. Not because she looked so coldly beautiful but because her gaze seemed to penetrate into him without leaving him anything more than the sense of being watched. Like someone who's come into your house while you're still asleep and has taken away all your dreams.
The old woman left them to go home, and after a few moments she followed her out onto the stairs. And that was when he saw her.
