Overview

Stop Breathe Listen Be Still

In a world that moves too fast and places little value on quiet times, the practice of contemplative prayer offers rest to your soul and invites God's presence into your life.

This thoughtful book, inspired by the best-selling DVD of the same name, invites you into the joy and peace that can be found in the age-old practice of contemplative prayer and features writings from some of today's most highly respected authors and speakers, including:

• Max Lucado

• Dr. Henry Cloud

• Philip Yancey

• Michelle McKinney Hammond

• Richard Foster

• Dallas Willard

• Dr. Calvin Miller

• Ken Gire

In these pages you will be introduced to the practice of lectio divina, which simply means "sacred reading." Using Scripture and silence, you will learn to invite God's presence and direction into your life through the thirty-one meditations in this beautifully illustrated book.

You don't have to be a scholar or a saint to experience contemplative prayer or enjoy God's divine companionship. As you walk through these thirty-one days, you will grow daily into a deeper, more satisfying prayer life with God. Open the book. Be still. Find rest for your soul.

Day 1

The ability to hear what God is saying, to see what God is doing, and to move in the realm of the miraculous comes as an individual develops the same intimacy with and dependence upon the Father. How did Jesus do what He did? The answer is found in His relationship with the Father. How will we do the "greater works than these" which Jesus promised? By discovering the same relationship of intimacy, simplicity, and obedience.

John Wimber

"My sheep listen to My voice; I know them and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of My hand." -- John 10:27-28 NASB

All Ears to the Father

Contemplative prayer is listening prayer. It is attentiveness. Sometimes when our children talk with us, we wish that they might just listen to us.

That's what contemplative prayer is. It's being all ears to what the Father has to say to us. It's very simple. We are becoming attentive to God. God is interested in us and what we have to say. We learn to become interested in what God has to say to us.

Richard Foster

Find Your Quiet Place

Ask the Holy Spirit to help you as you begin to learn to slow down to really listen for the Father's voice by meditating on His Word. The first step is to find a quiet place where you won't have any distractions. Turn off the phone, the music, the TV, anything you can that makes noise. Make an effort to come into God's presence for just a few minutes of silence. If you need to, set an alarm for one minute and just sit and breathe deeply. Does this feel uncomfortable? Do you feel more calm and relaxed? Think about how God wants you to be when you are in His presence.

The fruit of righteousness will be peace; the effect of righteousness will be quietness and confidence forever. My people will live in peaceful dwelling places,in secure homes,in undisturbed places of rest. -- ISAIAH 32:17-18 NIV
