Gr 9 Up
Suburban Vancouver teen Jay lives for his band's rehearsals. The Lunar Ticks are practicing for an upcoming Battle of the Bands that will match them against a neighboring high school's standout, Indigo Daze. Jay's growing crush on its lead singer adds a layer of romance to the story. The members of the band get into and out of trouble and into and out of fights with one another, and the group is ultimately successful at the competition (even though they don't win). The characters are edgy but likable. The short chapters and fast-paced, rock-themed action will appeal to reluctant and struggling readers, particularly those who are serious about their music.
