Batman is a true icon. From his first appearance in Detective Comics through to his big screen outings, the Dark Knight has become one of the world’s greatest fictional heroes.

RISE OF THE DARK KNIGHT

He’s the Dark Knight detective. Gotham’s guardian and one of the greatest heroes of all time. We reveal the History of the dark knight pre-DC Comics: New 52...

When Bruce Wayne’s parents were gunned down, the young Bruce made an oath to rid the world of the criminal scourge that had killed them. To this end he turned to the martial-arts and travelled to strange foreign lands to perfect himself. Training under great masters in many overseas locations, Bruce, through rigorous training, honed his skills for more than a decade, perfecting his combat abilities until he was the most accomplished martial- artist in the world. On his travels he also studied various mental disciplines at the world’s most prestigious universities, moulding his mind as well as his body. By the time he returned to Gotham City, he had become a Renaissance man, with an intellect rivalled only by the likes of Lex Luthor. At long last Bruce Wayne could fulfil his oath and begin his mission.

NIGHT OF THE BAT

Bruce ventured out into the Gotham City night determined to right all wrongs. He soon found out Gotham City’s streets didn’t welcome heroes. Shot, beaten, and close to death, Bruce’s first night trying to bring justice to Gotham City was almost his last. Recovering from his injuries, Bruce realized he needed more than brains and brawn to battle injustice – he needed something to strike real fear into a villain’s heart. While contemplating how to accomplish this, fate intervened. A lone bat smashed its way into his study in Wayne Manor and Bruce recalled a childhood experience when he’d been terrified by the bats living in the caverns underneath the estate. He took the image of the bat and emblazoned it on the chest plate of a dark and menacing costume. Once his greatest fear, the bat would now become an emblem of terror for the countless thugs and criminals of Gotham City. Bruce Wayne fought his war alone in the beginning but fate would ensure that he eventually had comrades to assist him in his struggle.
