Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive, easy to use reference of psychotherapeutic drugs that are commonly used in clinical practice by the clinician.
Audience: It is targeted at anyone dealing with psychiatric disorders such as students, residents, clinicians, nurses, and social workers.
Features: This new edition has been expanded to include clinical vignettes focusing on psychopharmacological treatment. It covers the four major classes of psychiatric drugs: anxiolytics, antipsychotics, antidepressants and antimanic drugs, but it doesn't cover all of the drugs in these classes, just those that are most commonly prescribed in the clinic in the U.K. Information on each class of drugs is presented in a consistent format — covering mode of action, indications and adverse effects using a bullet-point format. Each of the 35 new vignettes is nicely detailed, covering all possible treatment options.
Assessment: The title describes this book well. It is a good study companion for medical students and other ancillary staff who treat psychiatric patients.
