About the Author

Ken Horner has been a marquetry expert since 1961. Still active in the craft, he teaches classes to beginners at his home shop in Morgan Hill, CA and is the president of the American Marquetry Society. Ken also is the author of three very successful wood working books: Woodworkers' Essential Facts, Formulas & Short-Cuts, More Woodworkers' Essentials and the Essential Guide to the Steel Square .

Marquetry is painting with wood, making beautiful pictures pieced with veneer. Woodworker Horner (Woodworkers' Essential Facts, Formulas & Short-Cuts) offers an introduction to this decorative technique. After a list of needed materials and supplies, the author launches into the first simple project—a wooden bookmark. The projects grow in complexity moving through the book. Black-and-white line-drawn templates are included, but all instructions are text-based only. Step-by-step photos would have enhanced this manual that is not for the beginning woodworker. There are some great standout pieces, such as a beautiful forest on a curved vase, flower marquetry on shaker boxes, and delightful table tops. Pair with books on veneering such as Jonathan Benson's Woodworker's Guide to Veneering & Inlay. VERDICT What's missing here is an inspirational gallery as well as illustrations for project steps. While this book introduces the planning, piecing, and art of marquetry, it is not an introduction to woodworking, veneering, or tool use. Nevertheless, there is a clear gap in instructional texts on marquetry. For experienced woodworkers looking for a creative challenge.
