Description: This well designed and organized geriatric textbook for LPN students is divided into four units that include an overview of aging, basic skills for gerontological nursing, psychosocial care of the elderly, and physical care of the elderly. Each unit flows nicely and builds upon the previous ones. Also included in the same binder is a workbook and tests.
Purpose: The stated purpose is "to give the beginning nurse a balanced perspective on the realities of aging and to broaden the new nurse's viewpoint regarding aging people so that their needs can be met in a compassionate, caring and appropriate manner." With our world population aging at a rapid rate, more must be done to assure good evidence-based nursing care. This book makes much current evidence available to beginning LPN students as a foundation to build upon for future learning and practice.
Audience: Beginning LPN students studying gerontology are the intended audience and the book hits the mark well. The information is concise and understandable and the book includes questions to promote critical thought.
Features: A nice feature of this book is the cultural awareness information that is provided periodically throughout the units. Key terms that may prove difficult are listed at the beginning of the chapters with pronunciations and meanings. According to the author, this was done in part because of the increase in number of nursing students whose first language is not English. Throughout the book, a web site is referenced where audio pronunciations may be accessed along with expanded information on various gerontology subjects.
Assessment: This appears to be a well thought out, expanded edition of the basic LPN geriatric textbook. This is not only a comprehensive text for beginning LPN students studying gerontology, but should also serve as a useful reference as they move through their nursing education.
