Overview

In 1947, Jackie Robinson changed the game of baseball by becoming the first black player on a modern day major league team. Jackie made history with the Brooklyn Dodgers and this story is about Jackie and the seventeen players who followed him. These Black Heroes challenged the status quo and policies of team owners and were part of the first wave of black players who played on the sixteen major league teams that existed in 1947. It was not until 1959 (three years after Jackie retired) that the last of the sixteen teams added a black player to their roster.

About the Author

William (Bill) Leibforth has lived in Chicago and its surrounding areas all of his life. At the age of eight his love of baseball grew more intense during each game as he listened on the radio or walked to the games, sitting in the 50 cent bleacher seats. In those days he could wait for the players after each game in the parking lot with hopes of getting an autograph or at least a smile from the players. He admits to dreaming during most of his life of writing a book expressing his love for baseball. Finally in 2017,while beginning a well deserved retirement, his hopes were fulfilled when he started writing this book. Retirement time now includes enjoying time with his wife Susan, planning his next writing projects and spending as much time as he can with family and especially his granddaughters Rachel and Sydney.
