About the Author

Noel Streatfeild was born in Amberley, Sussex in 1895. Her first novel, Ballet Shoes, is her best-known book but she went on to write many well-loved stories for children, including Circus Shoes which won the Carnegie Medal in 1938. In 1983 she was honoured for her contribution to children's publishing when she was awarded an OBE. She died in 1986.

The Fossil sisters lived in the Cromwell Road. At that end of it which is farthest away from the Brompton Road, and yet sufficiently near it so one could be taken to look at the dolls’ houses in the Victoria and Albert every wet day. If the weather were not too wet, one was expected to “save the penny and walk.”
