Candace Huxtable, daughter of a British scientist, joins a Smithsonian expedition to the Dakota Badlands, much to the displeasure of the men in the group. They are guided by shrewd, self-educated Rufus Crowe, who warns them about what is permissible and what isn't in sacred Sioux country.
The scientists soon learn that Crowe was right, but that doesn't stop them. They want fossils, and the Sioux artifacts they find in burial grounds, no matter what the price.
