Purpose: Infection-associated renal diseases are addressed in large textbooks on kidney diseases, frequently buried in chapters discussing various forms of glomerulonephritis or interstitial nephritis. This book is intended as a comprehensive but user-friendly resource on renal complications of bacterial infection. In an era of emerging new bacterial strains and a staphylococcal epidemic, this book is very relevant.
Audience: The audience includes nephrologists, general internists, infectious disease specialists, pathologists, and urologists. The review is written at a level appropriate for medical students to practicing providers. The authors have much experience in this area and share their thoughtful expertise.
Features: The chapters focus on eight important topics in the relationship between bacterial infection and renal disease. The topics range from staphylococcus associated-GN to endocarditis. The focus is on providing a clinically relevant resource and, as a result, no abstract reviews are included. I appreciate that the book is straightforward, which makes it easy to find useful information. The color micrographs and illustrations are quite well done. All chapters are written by experts in the field and include the most current information. What's missing is an electronic companion that would be helpful for teaching purposes and mobile access.
Assessment: This well-written book includes dynamic images that make it a very useful resource for students as well as veteran providers. Infections are increasingly common, as are renal complications, and this is a nice overview. I will certainly use this in my program as a tool for educating trainees.
