Backhoes use buckets with big teeth to dig and lift dirt and rock. They move on rolling tracks and are a very important machine used in building roads and sidewalks. All this and more can be found in this large photographic picture book. This is a great read for any little one with an interest in BIG machines (most boys I know) and would also be highly instructional for little ones living near a construction site. The book, like the machine it describes, is big, making it easy to handle. Simple text and oversized photos bring these mighty machines up close and personal. Major machine parts are identified with a colorful textbox overlaying the photos. Perhaps equally appealing to a preschooler, the book is arranged like a big-kid textbook, with a table of contents, glossary, bibliography and index. Part of the Pebbles Plus publications, the "Mighty Machines" series supports national standards related to science, technology and society. As such, the book also includes information on how to link to "FactHound," an educational site on the Internet, for additional resources related to this book.

Capstone’s Pebble Plus imprint consistently features outstanding informational books for young children. The books combine a spacious format (excellent for use with groups) and highly appealing topics. The Mighty Machines 29-title series covers not only big trucks, such as cranes and earthmovers, but also fighter planes and military helicopters, subjects that are much harder to find for young enthusiasts. Although these titles are written at a level that preschoolers can understand, new readers will find them anything but babyish, and even more advanced readers will enjoy the additional information within the glossary.

PreS-Gr 2-Expect these dynamic and visually appealing titles to fly off the shelves. Powerful full-page color photographs, with key parts of the vehicles labeled, are enhanced by the large format. The machines, their parts, and the work they do are described in easy-to-read, large-print texts. ("Bulldozers change the shape of the land.") The further readings offer interesting and appropriate choices for avid truck fans. The suggested Internet sites are accessed through FactHound. Regrettably, all four titles picture only Caucasian operators and workers. (A female worker is shown in Earthmovers).
