Karen Katz has written and illustrated more than fifty picture books and novelty books including the bestselling Where Is Baby’s Belly Button? After graduating from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, she attended the Yale Graduate School of Art and Architecture where she became interested in folk art, Indian miniatures, Shaker art, and Mexican art. Her book, Counting Kisses, was named one of the 100 Greatest Books for Kids by Scholastic Parent & Child and was a Children’s Book-of-the-Month Club Main Selection. A bevy of Katz's now-trademark circular-headed babies enthusiastically encounter different shapes. "Baby sees circles." The circles represented on the facing page are a clock, a ball, cookies and pizza. This pattern continues through squares, triangles and rectangles, followed by a hodgepodge (star, heart, oval, diamond) that is less successful in communicating the concept. Nothing revolutionary here, but the book's construction makes it stand out. Rather than the usual board pages, these are made of wood with card-stock pages pasted on and acting as hinges. This makes for a pleasantly solid book with pages even the chubbiest baby fingers can manipulate. Refreshingly, the baby on the cover is black; in the interior there is one more black baby and an Asian baby, but the rest are white. Companion titles are Baby's Colors (ISBN: 978-1-4169-9821-1) and Baby's Numbers (978-1-4424-0827-2). (Board book. 6 mos.-18 mos.)
