After graduating from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, she attended the Yale Graduate School of Art and Architecture where she became interested in folk art, Indian miniatures, Shaker art, and Mexican art. Her book, Counting Kisses, was named one of the 100 Greatest Books for Kids by Scholastic Parent & Child and was a Children’s Book-of-the-Month Club Main Selection. Veteran baby book creator Katz introduces sights, areas, and objects common to a baby’s world in this large-format board book that includes flaps, touch-and-feel elements, and shiny or reflective surfaces. Most scenes stick close to home as Katz’s roundheaded babies appear in bedrooms and kitchens (where flaps allow readers to peek in the fridge, stove, and cupboards). “Baby goes to the park,” writes Katz in an outdoor scene. “What will Baby find?” (Nearby items, all labeled, include a foil-accented kite, tree with rough bark, squirrel, slide, and ball.) It’s a cozy look at the basic elements of a baby’s life, with lots to explore on each page. Ages 1–4. (Feb.)

Baby-Toddler—Katz returns with her round-faced babies in this busy board book. Readers follow a diverse set of babies through their day starting with waking up and ending with bedtime. The popular format of labeling multiple recognizable objects on a page makes this board book one that little ones will return to again and again. Lift- the-flaps prompt interaction on every page, and children will enjoy finding the textured objects throughout the pictures. The flaps will need to be reinforced to make sure the book endures multiple circulations, but the textured elements will survive being handled by little hands even if the flaps are missing. A day in Baby's life, with flaps, textures, sparkly bling, and mirrors to explore. The first double-page spread, in bright, sunny colors, invites a white baby with blond hair to wake up and asks the reader, "What will baby see?" Beyond the baby's crib is a room full of toys and a window with a blazing sun and three butterflies in flight. The subsequent spreads show different babies (the second one has a dark brown complexion, the next two are white, and the final tot is possibly of Asian descent) eating, getting dressed, playing in the park, and then back in the crib for the night. Each page follows the same formula, with relatively sturdy flaps to lift or open and at least one tactile element per page, which are a mix of embossed elements or textiles embedded in the page. Katz's signature bright and cheery patterns and chubby, cherubic babes are in top form here, and the 10 1/2-inch-square trim is an ideal canvas. Serviceable text provides simple descriptors, and captions label many of the objects in each baby's world. Little fingers will enjoy exploring these pages again and again. (Board book. 1-3)
