Towards 1530 the Emperor Carlos asks the bishop of Mexico to provide him with information on the life and customs of the American Indians; the bishop fray Juan de Zumárraga sends the monarch the beginning of an autobiographical tale that has given life to the voice of an Indian of about sixty years, Mixtil-Dark Cloud, in which he narrates his childhood, the mentality and customs of his town, its formation and its loves, always stormy and tragic. At last he becomes emissary of Moctezuma, comes in contact with the Spaniards of Courteous Hernán, is baptized and he receives the name of Juan Damasceno, although he faithfully follows the ways of the Aztecs. This fast-paced and harrowing history culminates in a personal tragedy that symbolically summarizes the clash of two civilizations, of two irreconcilable ways to understand the world.
