This monograph purports to encompass the universe of autoimmune reactions. Its intent is to be a single source of contemporary concepts of autoimmune disease. It is written for immunologists and appropriately expresses the multi-factorial etiology of autoimmune disease. It tends to be slanted towards chemical-mechanistic etiologic approaches to autoimmune diseases and suffers from an absence of logic in the flow of chapter presentations. Moreover, there is a wide range of quality, ranging from a two-page chapter with two-and-a-half pages of citations on alcohol and anesthetics in autoimmune disease to several outstanding chapters on epitope mimicry, T-cell antigen receptors, rheumatoid arthritis, and autoimmune kidney disease. Unfortunately, the organization of the book lends a feeling of incoherence and it is difficult reading throughout. Amazingly, there is very little emphasis on apoptosis, which now is a very "hot" topic among those trying to understand autoimmune diseases and how they are allowed to develop. There is very little emphasis on T-cell regulation and cytokine abnormalities that could also be possible explanations. This book should be rated as an incomplete review of the contemporary understanding of autoimmune diseases that might be of some interest to basic immunologists who are interested in reading about this burgeoning sub-field of immunology.
