Description: This is a true surgical atlas in the vein of Zollinger's Atlas of Surgical Operations, 10th edition, Ellison and Zollinger (McGraw-Hill, 2016), but with a minimally invasive slant. Rather than focusing on a text-heavy book with a great deal of preoperative and postoperative care and complication management, this work focuses on the day of surgery details, with excellent medical illustrations of the relevant anatomy and surgical steps.
Purpose: The purpose is to serve as a primer of the indications, critical work-up, and operative steps of different minimally invasive procedures. The objective of the authors and illustrators is to provide a virtual mentor, preparing readers with descriptions of the relevant anatomy related to the procedure and breaking down the operation into the steps needed to complete it.
Audience: The audience includes surgical residents or newly minted general and minimally invasive surgeons. As one of the forefathers of the field, Dr. Hunter's credentials are unimpeachable and his approaches to various surgical pathologies have been taught to aspiring surgeons for decades. The associate editors are also all recognized as leaders in their fields.
Features: Simply put, this is a classic surgical atlas for procedures that can be approached with minimally invasive techniques. Each chapter discusses the essential work-up, surgical anatomy, and operative steps. The strength of the book is the text with the clinical pearls of the operation and the associated illustrations that complete the picture. As Dr. Hunter mentions in the preface, the clear deficiency of this book is the lack of a companion video component. While I agree that we often think of steps in a pictorial sense, the addition of a video would be a huge benefit to readers.
Assessment: I am an admitted bibliophile and this book only serves to feed that addiction. This is a very valuable resource for chief residents or junior staff who, lacking the continued mentorship available during training, would like to brush up on the key steps and anatomy of a given minimally invasive surgical procedure. Outside of querying different video-sharing platforms, this book is unique in its objective and goals. I'm sure it will be a benefit for the next generation of minimally invasive surgeons, just as Zollinger's Atlas has been for surgeons performing traditional open operations.
