The Atlas of Image-Guided Intervention in Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine is a practical guide for practitioners who perform interventional procedures with radiographic guidance to alleviate acute or chronic pain. The author provides an overview of each technique, with detailed full-color illustrations of the relevant anatomy, technical aspects of each treatment, and a description of potential complications. For this revised and expanded Second Edition, the author also discusses indications for each technique, as well as medical evidence on the technique's applicability. The new edition features original drawings by a noted medical artist and for the first time includes three-dimensional CT images that correlate with the radiographic images and illustrations for a fuller understanding of the relevant anatomy.

Description: This book, a hybrid of text and illustrations describing commonly performed pain procedures, uses a combination of drawings, fluoroscopy images, and 3D CT reconstructions. The main difference between this and the first edition published in 2005 is the inclusion of the 3D CT images.
Purpose: It is intended as a visual guide to commonly performed pain procedures.
Audience: The intended audience is practicing pain physicians and trainee physicians. In my opinion, pain fellows will find it most helpful at the start of their fellowship. The author is well known in the field of pain.
Features: Most of the procedures covered are spine related. The book consists of four sections comprising 16 chapters. The first section covers principles of fluoroscopy including radiation safety, needle advancement tips, and pharmacology of drugs used in injection therapies. Section two focuses on epidural and facet injections at different levels of the spine along with lumbar discography and SI joint injection. Section three outlines sympathetic blocks for the abdominal and pelvic viscera as well as upper and lower limbs. The last section covers implantable devices. The book has a unique simplicity to it. Each block is described in a very logical way, starting with an overview of the procedure, followed by anatomical considerations, patient selection/indications. Technique descriptions include patient positioning, fluoro position/angle, and drugs to be injected, finishing up with complications of the procedure. The book also provides the level of evidence for each block, an important consideration when getting informed consent from patients. With all the stress on image guidance, the book could have used a few more images. There is some reliance on diagrams to improve visual guidance. Also, the book lacks any troubleshooting tips in case of a vascular puncture while doing a procedure. More importantly, it details different angles for optimizing the view for a procedure without providing any objective endpoint to account for individual patient variability. Quite a few procedures are missing, such as trigeminal ganglion block or sphenopalatine block. The text is at times too simplistic and glosses over important details necessary for proper block performance, like when describing thoracic facet block.
