Description: This is the third edition of a book that combines the features of a textbook and a photographic atlas.
Purpose: The preface promotes it as more atlas than text, with a stated purpose of allowing "the student to more easily understand the arrangement of anatomical structures." It also indicates that the new larger size and lay-flat binding make it more useful in the dissection laboratory.
Audience: Medical, dental, and allied health students are the indicated audiences.
Features: The core of the book consists of high-quality, unlabeled color photos of dissections, accompanied by a line drawing of each specimen where major structures are identified. Tissues and structures in the drawings are color-coded, and each is accompanied by a small orientation guide. Other than some introductory schematics at the beginning of each regional chapter, there are no other figures or tables related to the text, which occupies 10 to 30 percent of most pages. Cross-sectional anatomy is included, but very little imaging or surface anatomy. At the end of each chapter are multiple choice questions plus case studies that include a series of short-answer questions. These self-study quizzes plus the new size and binding are the major new features of this edition.
Assessment: The book is very well done, with succinct descriptive text, useful quizzes, and nice dissections and photos. The combination of textbook and photographic atlas is unique, although with the necessary reduction in scope, it is unclear whether this book is preferable to using one of each.
