Description: This book is filled with full-color photographs and radiographs that illustrate a myriad of canine and feline dental diseases that are encountered in small animal practice. In addition, the author describes each dental procedure using detailed photographs and a "step-by-step" outline of the procedure.
Purpose: The author says he created this book for veterinarians to acquaint them with dental diseases and possible treatments through imagery. Although the book successfully depicts step-by-step dental procedures and has beautiful images, I believe the true audiences are veterinary students and pet owners. I see this as an exam room book that can be used to explain to clients the procedure(s) that will be performed on their pets. Also, it can be used to teach students how to diagnose and treat common and uncommon diseases. I think there would need to be more written descriptions of the procedures for veterinarians to utilize this book to learn a new technique.
Audience: This book serves as a good review for veterinarians in practice. The author is a human dentist who later became a veterinarian and is very experienced in dentistry and oral surgery. However, he is not EVDC and/or AVDC board certified.
Features: The section on periodontal disease describes only three stages, whereas other books mention four stages of periodontal disease.
Assessment: This is a good quality atlas that can be used to illustrate dental diseases to clients and students and as a review for general practitioners.
