Description: This is a comprehensive atlas of artifacts in neurophysiology, including EEG, EMG, MEG, evoked potentials, sleep, autonomic studies, and other procedures. It also includes chapters on the special issues in the ICU and intraoperative monitoring.
Purpose: While the book has a general discussion of the principles of the various neurophysiological modalities, this is not a basic textbook and assumes a working knowledge of the procedures. Its purpose is to highlight the many biological and environmental factors that make interpretation so challenging. In addition to many illustrations and tables highlighting common principles and artifacts, each individual modality has abundant examples of the pitfalls in interpretation.
Audience: This atlas is appropriate for child and adult neurologists, neurocritical care specialists, and technologists. It is clearly written by well-respected experts in the various areas of the subspecialty. The book may be ideally suited for epileptologists, since that area accounts for almost half of the examples.
Features: The book begins with a discussion of the basis for artifacts in all neurophysiological procedures, which require extensive work to maximize signal and minimize noise. Although we have come a long way from the heavily shielded rooms that were the only way to obtain decent EEG recordings, there remain many challenges. The epigram of an electroencephalographer from decades ago remains pertinent — reading EEGs is easy once you eliminate all of the potential artifacts. What makes this atlas worthwhile is its comprehensive nature, which incorporates fundamental common principles and problems while respecting the special nature of the differences. Individual chapters are devoted to each technology and even within a single neurophysiological procedure, separate chapters cover children and adults. Each highlights the traps and pitfalls that can lead to misinterpretation.
Assessment: This atlas is an important addition to the library of anyone who uses clinical neurophysiology. Not just EEG, EMG or MEG, but much more. It covers all of the modalities in the ICU, both invasive such as extraventricular drainage and noninvasive such as transcutaneous doppler ultrasonography and near-infrared spectroscopy. In addition, it reviews autonomic neurophysiology studies and intraoperative monitoring. All have potential physiological, environmental, and technical artifacts that can confuse and confound. This book goes far to help clinicians confidently steer through these challenging waters and better distinguish between signal and noise. Since most readers will be neither engineers nor physicists, it is reassuring that such training is not necessary and the basic concepts can be supported using simple equations. For anyone interested, the chapter on equipment and instrumentation goes far to explain the scientific basis of all clinical neurophysiology.
