Size I hook: 3 sc = 1 inch; 3 sc rnds = 1 inch


PATTERN NOTES

SPECIAL STITCH

Loop stitch (lp st): Wrap yarn from front to back over index finger. Insert hook in next st and under the strands of yarn from behind your index finger and draw yarn through the st. With yarn lp still on your index finger, yo and draw through 2 lps on hook. Remove lp from finger.

Outer Cone

Rnd 10: Sl st in first st, ch 1, working in back lps only, sc in each st around. (24 sc)

Rnds 11–13: Sc in each st around. At the end of rnd 13, change color(see Stitch Guide) to white.

Rnds 14–17: Sc in each st around. At the end of rnd 17, change color to black.

Rnds 18 & 19: Sc in each sc around. Inner Cone is rnds 1–8 of Topper and rnds 10–19 is the Outer Cone of Topper; rnd 9 is Bottom of Cone. Push Inner Cone into Outer Cone and stuff lightly with fiberfill between layers.

SIGN

Sign Front

Row 1: With size I hook and white, ch 18, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each rem ch across, turn. (17 sc)

Rows 2–7: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn. At the end of last row, change color(see Stitch Guide) to black.

Rnd 8: Now working in rnds, ch 1, sc evenly sp around outer edge, working 3 sc in each corner, join in beg sc. Fasten off.


Letters

Make 3.

Each letter is crocheted the same. With size I hook and with black, ch 17, leaving a length of yarn, fasten off.

To make letters evenly sp on Sign Front, start with center O. Each letter should be approximately 1 inch wide x 1¾ inches tall. With tapestry needle and rem length of yarn, tack each letter to Sign Front spelling out ZOO.


Sign Back

Rows 1–7: With black, rep rows 1–7 of Sign Front. At the end of row 7 do not fasten off.

Rnd 8: Now working in rnds, ch 1, sc evenly sp around outer edge, working 3 sc in each corner, join in beg sc, leaving a 24-inch length, fasten off.

With WS of Sign Front and Back facing, thread tapestry needle with rem length and, working through both thicknesses, whipstitch(see illustration) edges tog around outer edge, inserting cardboard between layers before closing.


Arch

Rnd 1: With black, leaving a 6-inch length at beg, ch 2, 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook.

Rnd 2: Sc in each sc around. Rep rnd 2 until piece measures 7 inches long. Leaving 6-inch length, fasten off. Sew each end of Arch to top of Sign (see photo) .


Vertical Bar

Make 2.

Rnd 1: With black, leaving a 6-inch length at beg, ch 2, 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook.

Rnd 2: Sc in each sc around. Rep rnd 2 until piece measures 13/4 inches. Leaving 6-inch length, fasten off. Sew Vertical Bars centered to top of Sign and Arch (see photo) .


FLOWER

Make 5 each red & yellow.

Note: Instructions given are for red Flowers. Changes for yellow Flowers are in [].

Rnd 1: With size F hook and yellow [pumpkin], ch 2, 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join in beg sc. Fasten off.

Rnd 2: Join red [yellow] in any sc of rnd 1, [ch 3, 3 dc, ch 2, sl st in same st, sl st in next st] 5 times, leaving a length of yarn, fasten off.

Sew Flowers in groups of 2 evenly sp around on the Grass or as desired.

CHAPTER 3

HIPPO


BODY


Rnd 1: With lavender, ch 48, join to form a ring, ch 1, sc in each ch around. (48 sc)

Rnds 2–9: Sc around, inc(see Stitch Guide) 6 sc evenly sp around. (96 sc)

Rnd 10: Sc in each sc around.

Rnds 11–18: Sc around, dec(see Stitch Guide) 6 sc evenly sp around. At the end of rnd 18, sl st in next st, leaving 24-inch length, fasten off. (48 sc)

Matching sts of rnd 18 to opposite side of foundation ch, whipstitch edges tog, stuffing with fiberfill as work progresses to form ring.


HEAD

Rnd 1: With lavender, ch 3, join to form a ring, ch 1, 2 sc in ch around. (6 sc)

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)

Rnd 3: Rep rnd 2. (24 sc)

Rnds 5 & 6: Sc in each sc around. At the end of rnd 6, fasten off. At the end of rnd 6 of 2nd Cheek, do not fasten off.

Rnd 7: Working on 2nd Cheek, sc in each of next 18 sc, pick up first Cheek, sc in each of next 18 sc, join in first st of 2nd Cheek, leaving a 8-inch length of yarn, fasten off. (36 sc)

With tapestry needle and rem length, whipstitch(see illustration) edges of rem Cheek closed.


Rest of Muzzle

Rnd 8: Join lavender in same st as rnd 7 ended, sc in each st around. (36 sc)

Rnd 9: Sc in each sc around.

Rnd 10: Ch 1, sc in each of next 4 sc, sc dec in next 2 sc] around. (30 sc)

Rnd 11: Rep rnd 9, sl st in next st, leaving a length of yarn, fasten off. Sew Muzzle to lower half of Head.


EAR

Inner Ear

Make 2.

Row 1: With orchid, ch 2, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, turn.

Rows 2 & 3: Ch 1, sc in each of next 2 sc, turn. At the end of row 3, fasten off.


Ear Back

Rep rows 1–3 of Inner Ear with lavender. At the end of row 3, do not fasten off.

Place both Inner Ear and Ear Back tog, with Inner Ear facing. Working through both thicknesses, work 2 sc in each of next 2 sts, sc up side of Ear, 3 sc in opposite side of foundation ch, sc down other side of Ear, join in first st, leaving a length of yarn, fasten off.

Tack first and 4th sts tog to gather bottom of Ear. With Inner Ear facing front, sew Ears to Head 2 inches apart.


LEG

Make 4.

Rnd 1: With orchid, ch 3, join to form a ring, ch 1, 2 sc in each ch around. (6 sc)

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)

Rnd 3: Rep rnd 2. (24 sc)

Rnd 4: Sc in each sc around.

Rnd 5: Working in back lps only, sc in each st around, change color(see Stitch Guide) to lavender.

Rnds 6–10: Sc in each sc around. At the end of rnd 10, leaving a length of yarn, fasten off. Stuff Legs with fiberfill and sew to Body as indicated on Assembly Diagram.


TAIL

Leaving a 4-inch length of lavender at beg, ch 8, working in back bar of ch(see illustration), sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in back bar of each rem ch, leaving a length of yarn, fasten off.

With beg rem length, attach Tail to end of Body centering between back Legs.

Cut 4 strands of orchid each 3 inches long. Holding strands tog, knot on end sp of Tail. Trim ends.


NOSTRIL BACK

Make 2.

With orchid, ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 2 chs, leaving a length of yarn, fasten off. Sew each Nostril Back to outer edges of Muzzle curving slightly to form a cup-like shape.


EYE

Make 2.

With tapestry needle and black, embroider 5 or 6 vertical straight stitches(see illustration) for each eye, placing Eyes just above Muzzle.


NOSTRIL

Make 2.

With tapestry needle and black, embroider 2 straight stitches for each nostril in front of Nostril Back.

TOOTH

Make 2.

Row 1: With Aran, ch 3, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, turn. (2 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each of next 2 sc, leaving a length of yarn, fasten off.

Fold Tooth in half, matching sides of piece, whipstitch around Tooth. Working through sts on long side, sew first Tooth to underside of each Cheek in line with Nostril Backs.

CHAPTER 4

RHINO


BODY

Rnd 1: With buff, ch 48, join(see Pattern Notes) to form a ring, ch 1, sc in each ch around. (48 sc)

Rnds 2–7: Sc around, inc(see Stitch Guide) 6 sc evenly sp around. (84 sc)

Rnds 8–11: Sc in each sc around.

Rnds 12–17: Sc around, dec(see Stitch Guide) 6 sc evenly sp around. At the end of rnd 17, sl st in next st, leaving 24-inch length, fasten off. (48 sc)

Matching sts of rnd 18 to opposite side of foundation ch, whipstitch(see illustration) edges tog, stuffing with fiberfill as work progresses to form ring.

Inner Ear

Row 1: With pink, ch 2, sc in 2nd ch from hook, turn. (1 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in next sc, turn. (2 sc)

Rows 3 & 4: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.

Row 5: Ch 1, sc in each sc across. Fasten off.


Ear Back

Rep rows 1–5 of Inner Ear with buff. At the end of row 5, do not fasten off.

Place Inner Ear and Ear Back tog, with Inner Ear facing. Working through both thicknesses, work 2 sc in each of next 2 sts, sc up side of Ear, 3 sc in opposite side of foundation ch, sc down other side of Ear, join in first st, leaving a length of yarn, fasten off.

Tack first and 4th sts tog to gather bottom of Ear. Run needle up center of Ear Back to tip of Ear, turn needle and reinsert needle back into Ear (in another sp next to the one needle exited through) and run back down through Ear. Pull strand slightly to pull Ear Back into a slight arch shape. Sew Ears to top of Head with Inner Ear facing outwards to the sides of Head.


LARGE HORN

Rnd 1: With Aran, ch 4, 4 sc in 2nd ch from hook.

Rnd 2: Sc in each sc around.

Rnd 3: [Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] twice. (6 sc)

Rnd 4: Rep rnd 2.

Rnd 5: [Sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc] twice. (8 sc)

Rnds 6 & 7: Rep rnd 2.

Rnd 8: [Sc in each of next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc] twice, leaving a 12-inch length of yarn, fasten off. (10 sc)


SMALL HORN

Rnds 1–4: Rep rnds 1–4 of Large Horn.

Stuff Horns, sew to Head, sewing Large Horn at the top end of Muzzle, and the Small Horn ¼ inch above Large Horn. Bend Large Horn slightly so it is curved towards Small Horn.


LEG

Make 4.

Rnd 1: With pink, ch 3, join to form a ring, ch 1, 2 sc in each ch around. (6 sc)

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)

Rnd 3: Rep rnd 2. (24 sc)

Rnd 4: Sc in each sc around, draw up a lp of buff, fasten off pink.

Rnd 5: Working in back lps (see Stitch Guide) only, sc in each st around.

Rnds 6-9: Sc in each sc around. At the end of rnd 9, leaving a 12-inch length of yarn, fasten off.

Stuff Legs with fiberfill and sew to Body as indicated on Assembly Diagram.
