Este breve texto inédito muestra el costado más humano de Viktor Frankl y nos invita a ocuparnos de la muerte como un horizonte que, lejos de paralizarnos, ha de servir para hacer crecer nuestras posibilidades de ser. Después de sobrevivir a los campos de concentración en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, Auschwitz entre ellos, la finitud y el sufrimiento fueron un constante asunto de preocupación existencial y filosófica para Viktor Frankl. En la célebre conferencia recogida en este volumen, pronunciada en 1984 en Dornbirn (Austria), el lector se enfrenta a algunos de los grandes interrogantes que todo ser humano se ha hecho alguna vez: el sentido de nuestra vida, cómo encajar el dolor, por qué ayudar (o no) a nuestros semejantes, el transcurso de la vida y el envejecimiento y, sobre todo, cómo plantar cara a nuestro inevitable final. Si “la muerte es solo un punto final del continuo decir adiós”, resulta urgente aprender a despedirse. Más aún en una sociedad y una época en las que se impone el valor de lo que no caduca, de lo que permanece inalterable frente al paso del tiempo: de lo que nunca muere.
This brief unpublished text shows the most human side of Viktor Frankl and invites us to deal with death as a horizon that, far from paralyzing us, must serve to increase our possibilities of being. After surviving concentration camps in World War II, Auschwitz among them, finitude and suffering were a constant matter of existential and philosophical concern for Viktor Frankl. In the famous conference included in this volume, given in 1984 in Dornbirn (Austria), the reader is faced with some of the great questions that every human being has ever asked himself: the meaning of our life, how to deal with pain, for what to help (or not) our fellow human beings, the course of life and aging and, above all, how to stand up to our inevitable end. If "death is just an end point of the continuous saying goodbye", it is urgent to learn to say goodbye. Even more so in a society and a time in which the value of what does not expire prevails, of what remains unchanged over time: of what never dies.
