Reading Group Guide

A third businessman walked past Kennedy, knife out, intent on stabbing Jason in the back. Kennedy flinched away from the wicked-looking knife and bumped into one of the upside-down chairs. The metal screech snapped her out of her shock and she looked frantically around for a way to help Jason. Her gaze snagged on the heavy metal chair.

She stuffed the croissant in her mouth and hefted the chair by the seat. Quickly, she ran up to the man at Jason's back and swung it across the back of his head. To her astonishment, he dropped like a stone. Gingerly stepping over his legs, she kicked the knife away from him and raised the chair to defend against the others. But there was little need. As she watched, Jason smoothly flipped the first attacker over his hip, making sure he hit the ground headfirst. The man did not get up.

The second man lunged, slashing wildly, and Jason quickly shifted out of the way. Not fast enough, though. Kennedy didn't see the moment the blade connected with his upper right arm, but the bloom of red spreading over the sleeve of his light grey Henley gave the injury away.

Jason spotted her and made a quick shooing motion, one eyebrow rising in what she hoped was approval at her downed attacker.

The last man turned away from Jason and launched himself towards her, knife flashing in the air.

Kennedy garbled a scream, her mouth still holding the croissant, and kept her chair up, using its legs to keep the man at bay. His arm got stuck between the rungs and she twisted sharply, hearing a screech of metal on metal as the knife scraped along the chair.

The man fell to the sidewalk, Jason having incapacitated him from behind once his attention was on Kennedy. She put the chair down and sat on it before her legs gave way. She started to speak, stopped, and bit the croissant, chewing furiously but not tasting it.

Jason chuckled. "You don't let much faze you, do you? Thanks for the assist." He frowned as he kicked the last man over onto his back. He was a nondescript, middle aged white man. "I don't recognize these guys. But apparently someone wants me dead."
