Overview

As adoption of Electronic Health Record Systems (EHR-Ss) shifts from early adopters to mainstream, an increasingly large group of decision makers must assess what they want from EHR-Ss and how to go about making their choices. The purpose of this book is to inform that decision. This book explains typical needs of a variety of stakeholders, describes current and imminent technologies, and assesses the available evidence regarding issues in implementing and using EHR-Ss.

Divided into four important sections—Needs, Current State, Technology, and Going Forward—the book provides the background and general notions regarding the EHRS and lays out the framework; delves into the historical review; presents a high-level view of EHR systems, focused on the needs of different stakeholders in the health care and the health enterprise; offers practical views of existing systems and current (and short-term future) issues in specifying a EHR system and deciding how to approach the institution of such a system; deals with technology issues, from front- to back-end; and describes where we are and where we should be going with EHR systems.

Designed for use by chief information officers, chief medical informatics officers, medical liaisons to hospital systems, private practitioners, and business managers at academic and non-academic hospitals, care management organizations, and practices. Description: This book provides a broad overview of electronic health record systems (EHRS), from needs assessment to implementation to evaluation of the system once in place to ongoing challenges. This second edition includes a number of added chapters that represent the increased experience that has been gained in the field of medical informatics as it relates to EHRS.
Purpose: The purpose is to tell the story of EHRS, from its history to the present, and the book includes realistic and practical advice and examples from experts in this quickly evolving field. Because each of the logically presented chapters is written by experts, the book meets these objectives well and in an unbiased manner. The book is timely in that EHRS are being implemented at an unprecedented rate and organizations around the world are struggling with purchasing decisions and implementations.
Audience: The book is written for a broad audience, from chief information officers to informatics students, and will be useful to both novice and those with experience as the topics are diverse. A particular strength of this book is the range of experienced contributors, who are considered experts on the topics they discuss in each of the chapters.
Features: The book is divided into four sections and moves from needs assessment and system design to system evaluation and critique. The content is particularly well presented by experts, including academics, chief information officers, consultants, vendors, end users, clinicians, radiologists, technologists, applied informatics researchers, and basic scientists. The broad range of the contributors is the book's true strength and leads me to believe that chapters will be reviewed and reread by those charged with EHRS purchase, implementation, and evaluation.
Assessment: For those with an interest in EHRS, this is a book that is easy to read from cover and to cover. It is also a reference with chapters that will be reread as the particular challenges of purchasing and implementing EHRS are faced and worked through. Because of the rapidly evolving technology and experience in this field, this second edition is necessary and offers information on topics that were not broadly recognized before. The experience of the contributors makes it one of the better books available in the field.
