CHAPTER 1

Aran Eyelet

A richly textured center panel set off with lacy, eyelet-filet side panels gives both dimension and delicacy to this pretty throw that works up quickly with double-strand yarn and a large hook.

MATERIALS

Medium (worsted) weight yarn: 58 oz/2,900 yds/1,644g off-white

Size N/13/9mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge

Tapestry needle


GAUGE

With 2 strands held tog: 2 dc sts = 1 inch; 1 dc row = 1 inch


PATTERN NOTES

Entire afghan is worked with 2 strands of yarn held together.

The treble crochet used in the Center Panel gives a popcorn effect.


SPECIAL STITCH

V-stitch (V-st): (Dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch or in ch sp of next V-st.

SIDE PANEL

Make 2.

Row 1: Ch 33, dc in 4th ch from hook (first 3 chs count as first dc), dc in each of next 2 chs, *ch 1, sk next 2 chs, V-st(see Special Stitch) in next ch, ch 1, sk next 2 chs*, dc in each of next 6 chs, ch 1, sk next ch, dc in each of next 6 chs, rep between *, dc in each of last 4 chs, turn. (20 dc, 2 V-sts)

Row 2: Ch 3 (count as first dc), dc in each of next 3 sts, ch 1, V-st in next V-st, ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp, dc in each of next 4 sts, ch 3, sk next 2 sts, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 3, sk next 2 sts, dc in each of next 4 sts, ch 1, V-st in next V-st, ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp, dc in each of last 4 sts, turn. (16 dc, 2 V-sts, 2 ch-3 sps, 1 sc)

Row 3: Ch 3, dc in each of next 3 sts, ch 1, V-st in next V-st, ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp, dc in each of next 2 sts, sk next 2 sts, ch 3, [sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 3] twice, sk next 2 sts, dc in each of next 2 sts, ch 1, V-st in next V-st, ch 1, dc in each of last 4 sts, turn.

Rows 7–50: Rep rows 2–6 consecutively, ending with row 5. For First Side Panel, fasten off. For 2nd Side Panel, do not fasten off


FIRST SIDE PANEL

Row 51: Working in ends of rows, join with sc in row 1, sc in same row, 2 sc in each row across. Fasten off. (100 sc)

Do not work on opposite end of rows.


2ND SIDE PANEL

Row 51: Working in end of rows, ch 1, 2 sc in each row across. Fasten off. (100 sc)

Do not work on opposite end of rows.


CENTER PANEL

Row 1: Ch 30, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across, turn. (29 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first st, [tr in next st, sc in next st] across, turn. (15 sc, 14 tr)

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each sc and in each tr across, turn. (29 sc)

Rows 4–87: Rep rows 2 and 3 alternately.

Row 88: Working in end of rows, ch 1, sc in each of first 7 rows, 2 sc in next row, [sc in each of next 5 rows, 2 sc in next row] 12 times, sc in each of last 7 rows. Fasten off. (100 sc)

Row 89: Working on opposite side of Panel, in end of rows, join with sc in row 1, sc in each of next 6 rows, 2 sc in next row, [sc in each of next 5 rows, 2 sc in next row] 12 times, sc in each of last 7 rows. Fasten off. (100 sc)


ASSEMBLY

With RS tog, working through both thicknesses, in row 89 of Center Panel and in row 51 of 1 Side Panel, with WS of pieces facing, join with sc in first st, sc in each st across. Fasten off.

Join rem pieces tog.


EDGING

Row 1: Working on opposite side of starting ch on all 3 pieces, with row 1 facing, join with sc in first st, sc in each st, in end of each row and in each seam across, turn. (97 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first st, [sk next 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, sk next 2 sts, sc in next st] across. Fasten off.

Working in last row of all 3 pieces, rep rows 1 and 2.

Fisherman's Blanket

Use 2 strands of yarn held together as 1 throughout.


SPECIAL STITCH

Berry stitch (berry st): Insert hook in next st, yo, pull through st (2 Ips on hook), working through first Ip only, ch 3, yo, pull through both Ips on hook.
