Overview

“Arabella embarks on another entertaining quest in an imaginative setting that combines 19th-century seafaring
with pulp-style space adventure.” -Publishers Weekly
Though happy to be back on her home planet of Mars, Arabella's peace is shattered when she receives
distressing news. Her long-absent fiancé Capt. Prakash Singh, commander of the Honorable Mars Company
airship Diana, has been taken as a prisoner of war on Venus, the very planet where the exiled Napoleon has
fled.
Desperate to rescue Singh any way she can, Arabella pays off the gambling debts of a rakish privateer captain
in order to arrange passage on his vessel. But when they're captured by a French squadron and taken to Venus,
Arabella finds herself reunited with Singh, as a captive in the same brutal prison-camp.
In a spacefaring adventure filled with interplanetary espionage, cosmic combat, and mind-blowing inventions,
Arabella finds herself torn between two very different-yet ultimately courageous-men. Together they plot a
daring conspiracy to expose Napoleon's dangerous plan: the building of a secret weapon that would make the
French emperor virtually unstoppable.
Praise for Arabella of Mars
“If Edgar Rice Burroughs, Jules Verne, and Patrick O'Brien had sat down together to compose a tale to amuse
Jane Austen, the result might be Arabella of Mars. So. Much. Fun!” -Madeleine Robins, author of the Sarah
Tolerance Regency mystery series
“A fanciful romp through a cosmic 1812, Hugo Award-winning Levine's first novel is a treat for steampunk
fantasy fans.” -Library Journal (starred review)

Charming young Arabella (introduced in Arabella of Mars) embarks on another entertaining quest in an imaginative setting that combines 19th-century seafaring with pulp-style space adventure. This time she’s setting out to rescue her fiancé from a prison camp on the planet Venus, where Napoleon’s forces are holding him and his crew. To do so she employs the help of a dashing and impulsive privateer, Captain Fox. The journey to Venus is pretty slow-paced, but the scheming and deprivation within the prison camp bring the plot back up to speed, and Arabella makes good use of her creativity and collaboration skills to save the day. This interesting piece of speculative fiction draws on venerable imaginings of distant worlds while still feeling fresh and original, especially to the younger readers who are its most likely audience. Agent: Paul Lucas, Janklow & Nesbit. (July)

"Excellent, entertaining, humorous" — RT Book Reviews (4 Stars) on Arabella of Mars

"Wits and cleverness save the ship and crew more than once in this rousing swashbuckler." —Publishers Weekly, starred review, on Arabella of Mars

“David Levine’s entertaining debut is a delightfully detailed airship adventure, complete with romance, pirates, Martians, automata, and a charming Jules Vernian imagining of the alternate-world science involved in sailing a ship straight through our solar system.” —Tina Connolly, author of the Ironskin Trilogy and Seriously Wicked

Napoleon Bonaparte has escaped from the Moon, and Arabella Ashby learns that her fiancé, Capt. Prakash Singh, and his crew have been captured and imprisoned by the French on Venus. Arabella must find a way to get to the enemy-controlled planet, then release her captain through either bribery or a fight. She enlists the less-than-inspiring privateer Capt. Daniel Fox and his ship Touchstone, but Arabella's brother insists their straitlaced neighbor, Lady Corey, accompany her as chaperone. Arriving on Venus, Arabella soon discovers that Napoleon has developed a secret weapon that could change the course of the war; can Arabella, Singh, and Fox, drawing on their skills and wiles, stop him? VERDICT Levine's sophomore work (after the Nebula Award-winning Arabella of Mars) brings back his plucky heroine and introduces charismatic characters for another engaging steampunk adventure among the stars.—KC
