Purpose: The primary aim is to review methods that can be used by toxicologists, pathologists, and pharmacologists in the analysis of chemical-induced apoptosis. Apoptosis is of primary importance to these fields, and this book provides reviews of apoptosis methods and details several techniques useful for designing experiments.
Audience: The book is addressed to practitioners in the field of pharmacology and toxicology, according to the author. However, the book is more widely applicable to general apoptosis research because the methods described are not limited to pharmacology and toxicology. It is apparent from reading the book that the editor and contributing authors are all authorities in their fields.
Features: The book emphasizes techniques that can be used to quantify apoptosis, such as cell morphology, flow cytometry, laser-scanning cytometry, ELISA, and DNA microarray. The flow cytometry and ELISA sections are the best, as they are applicable to a wide range of laboratories because of their ease of use and they do not require any extraordinary facilities. Though not all techniques are covered in detail, there are ample references provided by authors to answer researchers' questions. There are some chapters which are only dedicated to review, and would be more helpful as detailed protocols, especially because this is a methods book.
