Overview

The Medieval and Baroque architecture, artwork and religious buildings of Antwerp are treasures to behold - rich in significance, beauty and depth.

Tragically, many travel guides simply brush over the beautifully creative structures and artworks as mere items to check off a list during sightseeing in Antwerp, which has become a fine gem in the pantheon of Flemish culture.

By contrast, Antwerp - A Travel Guide of Art and Historyis designed for tourists wanting to achieve an in-depth understanding during their perusals of the wondrous achievements in painting, sculpture and design pioneered and proliferated within Antwerp. Rich yet accessible descriptions of the most significant works from the Dutch and Flemish pantheons of art offer guidance through the hidden gems and old town districts, spurring the reader to sublime comprehension.

This book is designed as a companion to a more general city guide, to be read as you tour and take in the many breathtaking works of art and ancient architectural design that confer majesty to the fashionably cosmopolitan city of Antwerp. The Cathedral of our Lady is richly described, with the Grote Markt and its surrounding districts receiving due consideration. Details of the Baroque and Renaissance era buildings, their purpose and their influence are described, bringing to life what might otherwise be incomprehensible, or merely baubles in a general tour.

In reading this book - part of a series on Belgian cities composed by lecturer of art and heritage architecture Maxime Jensens - you will imbue your journey with enlightenment and knowledge.

When you finish your journey to Antwerp, you will not simply carry happy memories of having seen and enjoyed the gorgeous culture, cuisine and fine hospitality - but a vivid, intense understanding of how significant and inseparable this city's art and architecture are from its nature and essential verve.

About the Author

Growing up in Brussels, Maxime Jensens developed a keen interest and sense of the historic legacies which underpin the towns of his nation. As a child, he beheld the many stunning achievements in architecture and art, whether they be on the parts of institutions such as the Christian church or individually prolific artists, sculptors or architects. Noting how these beautiful attributes seldom fail to awe visitors with their uniqueness, Jensens ambitiously aimed to make a career from their depiction, accurately relaying the past which so underpins his country.

Formerly a student of art history, Jensens today acts as a lecturer and blogger studying the old cities of both Belgium and France. Fluent in both French and English, his stated aim is to increase the awareness, appreciation and regard for his country’s art. It is to this end that this guide was published, for the benefit of visitors eager to plunge into the cultural bulwarks Belgium has to offer.
