The Lament: Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was a Russian short-story writer and playwright. He is considered to be one of the greatest short-story writers in the history of world literature and "The Lament" is one of the most memorable of his stories.

The Bet: "The Bet" is one of Chekhov's most anthologized stories. A rich banker makes a bet with a poor artist that he cannot voluntarily stay imprisoned for a long period of time. The result of the bet is quite different than either man could have supposed.
