Description: Although we have known about antiphospholipid syndrome for more than three decades now, very little has been revealed about what pathophysiological process triggers and drives the disease process, although there have been quite a few theories. The authors have done a good job addressing this issue, starting with historical facts and presenting current evidence-based data on this topic.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an overview of this very difficult subject that will benefit bench researchers as well as bedside clinicians.
Audience: The book would serve any audience who wants to know more about antiphospholipid syndrome. As the title states, it is an excellent tool for both bench researchers and bedside clinicians. The authors are senior experts in the field.
Features: Starting with historical facts, the book describes what is known so far about the pathophysiological mechanisms related to the disease process, mainly with APS-mediated thrombosis, pregnancy loss, and how infection can act as a trigger. The topics are divided according to the organ system involved, which makes it easy even for readers who are not rheumatologists or hematologists to find specific information. There could have been more figures or tables to aid in understanding. A short summary at the end of each chapter would be an excellent addition.
Assessment: This is an excellent, up-to-date overview of antiphospholipid syndrome. It will serve as a handy tool to get more information on the topic. The way it is divided into smaller chapters and subtopics makes it easier to read and use as a reference.
