Overview

“Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.”

So begins one of the most remarkable books of not only Russian, but all of world literature. It ends, hundreds of pages later, with Levin realising that “[My life] is no more meaningless, as it was before, but it has the positive meaning of goodness, which I have the power to put into it."

This definitive Cambridge World Classics edition brings together, for the first time in one volume, Tolstoy’s novel Anna Karenina with a sweeping 30 page commentary and preface on Tolstoy’s Legacy.

The masterful translation of Tolstoy's Russian is by Constance Garnett.
