About the Author

From as early as I can remember, I have always enjoyed crafting. From drawing and painting, to macrame and embroidery. As a teenager, I fell in love with yarn, the texture and bright colors and that by simply forming loops and knots an item could be made.Fast forward a few decades and I am retired and love that I can pursue my passion for drawing animals and yarn, full time. My creative husband is a knitter and we spend a large part of our time playing with yarn, trying new ideas, and enjoying our time together. Giraffe Scarf & Infinity Cowl

Materials

4 MEDIUM

• Caron Simply Soft medium (worsted) weight acrylic yarn (6 oz/315 yds/170g per skein):

9 [13] oz #9703 bone
1 [½ oz] each #9701 white and #9765 pumpkin
6 [3] yds #9727 black

• Sizes D/3/3.25mm and E/4/3.5mm crochet hooks or sizes needed to obtain gauge

• Tapestry needle

Gauge

Size D hook: 10 sc = 2 inches; 9 rows = 2 inches

Size E hook: 14 dc = 3 inches; 8 rows = 3 inches

Gauge is not critical for Body. When working from Chart, use any size hook needed to match width of Giraffe Motif(s) to width of Body.

Pattern Notes

Scarf has 2 Giraffe Motifs; Cowl has 1 Motif. Motifs are worked from top of animal down and from Chart and written instructions. For easier stitching, work Chart with small skeins of each color. Begin and end each color change with a long tail for any touch-up embroidery.

Weave in ends in Body as work progresses.

Chain-2 at beginning of all even-numbered rows counts as first half double crochet or as first double crochet of all odd-numbered rows unless otherwise stated.

When changing color, carry and work over color not in use on wrong side of piece. Do not cut or fasten off until work with each color is complete.

Each Chart square depicts 1 single crochet stitch. Refer to Color Key for color changes in each row. Follow odd-numbered rows from right to left and even-numbered rows from left to right for First Motif or Cowl; follow odd-numbered rows from left to right and even-numbered rows from right to left for 2nd Motif.

Rep rows 2 and 3 until Body measures 7 inches. At end of last row, do not turn or fasten off.

Giraffe Motif

Side 1

Row 1 (RS): With size D hook, ch 1, working in ends of rows, work 35 sc across narrow edge of Body, turn. (35 sc)

Scarf Only

With size D hook and RS of other end of Body facing, working in ends of rows, join(see Pattern Notes) bone in first row. Following Chart in reverse direction(see Pattern Notes), rep rows 1–44.

Cowl Only

Row 1 (RS): With size D hook and RS of other end of Body facing, working in ends of rows, join(see Pattern Notes) bone in first row, ch 1, work 35 sc across narrow edge of Body, turn. (35 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn. Leaving an 18-inch tail for sewing, fasten off.

Finishing

With beg and end tails, touch up Motif(s) with embroidery as needed, then weave in loose ends.

Scarf Only

Fringe

Cut 72 strands of bone each measuring 14 inches. Hold 2 strands of yarn tog and fold in half. *With RS facing, insert hook in first st of Giraffe Motif, draw folded end through, then pull tails through fold. Pull gently on tails to tighten. Rep from * in every other st and across edge of other Motif.

Cowl Only

With WS held tog, sew short ends tog.
