Editorial Reviews

Practical Pre-School - Issue 42

Anyone who knows or has read A Kiss Like This will love Animal Lullabies. Practitioners will enjoy using this CD and beautifully illustrated book to support creative development and literacy in their setting. There is a lot of cross-curricular scope for the text. Our favourite lullabies were ‘Worms’ read in a French accent, ‘The kangaroo joey’ in an Australian accent and the ‘Crocodile’ in a Caribbean accent. The songs encourage children to read, count, play with language and develop new vocabulary. I was a little disappointed that some lullabies were narrated with rhythm to background music rather than sung. Both male and female voices are used, with accents from around the world that intrigued the children.

Nursery World

The linking theme in this collection of verses is animals and sleep – how they get to sleep or what they get up to in their sleep. ‘Skunk’ made me and my child reviewer laugh: ‘Sweet dreams, scented dreams, my little skunkadee. All’s well that ends well, my little stinkaree.’ Verses two and three follow a similar pattern with some nice word play like ‘pongaroo’ and ‘honkydoo’.
We also enjoyed ‘Dog’: ‘Sniff the bedding, and sniff the night, turn round to the left, and round to the right. Keep one eye open, as long as you’re able, then dream of the scraps, dropped under the table.’
This collection successfully conveys the restlessness often associated with bedtime. There is lots to enjoy here.
