About the Author

Award-winning author Stella Blackstone has written many of Barefoot's best-selling titles, including the Bear series and the Cleo the Cat series. She has been writing for children for over twenty years. Stella lives in Somerset, UK.

Debbie Harter has illustrated over 20 books for Barefoot, including the beloved Bear series. As a child, Debbie would "lose herself in books (as long as they had pictures)" and hopes to continue doing so until she's very old. She lives in Cornwall, England.

Fred Penner has been entertaining kids and adults alike for more than twenty years. He has worn many hats — from folk-rock singer, television host and home video star to children's book author, UNICEF Canada spokesman, husband and father of four! Fred lives in Manitoba, Canada.

Harter (Walking Through the Jungle) once again plunges into a flamboyantly hued jungle, and--as the title hints--the joint is jumpin'. With a cast of multi-ethnic children (including a wheelchair-bound girl) serving as guides, readers discover that all the inhabitants have rhythm, like the fluffy black bear with a purple nose who "goes shake, shake, boogie, woogie, oogie!" and a hooded red snake with blue polka dots who "goes slither, slither, boogie, woogie, oogie!" Harter offers up spirited animal characterizations on each spread: a wiry orange monkey swings through the sapphire sky, a lean saffron leopard covers two spreads in a single leap. The paper-over-board book's visual electricity, along with its irresistible repetition of the "oogie" sound and rollicking beat (a simple music score is included at the end of the book, so the text can be sung) make this a particularly good choice for a lively group with an itch to move. PreS-Gr 2-Filled with brilliant tropical colors, this lively picture book combines poetry, song, and dance into a dazzling and fun-packed guessing game. On one double spread, the text reads, "Down in the jungle, come if you dare!/What can you see shaking here and there?" A clue in the illustration shows a boy peaking at an animal that is partly concealed by a large tree. A turn of the page reveals a bear that likes to dance: "Shake, shake, boogie, woogie, oogie!/That's the way she's shaking here and there." A monkey, a leopard, an elephant, and several other creatures also move in their own particular ways. The rhythm of the text encourages children to boogie-woogie right along. The vivid illustrations, done in watercolor, crayon, and pen and ink, show lush jungle scenes, colorful animals, and a cast of smiling children. A simple musical score is included. Part guessing-game and part dance, this rollicking picture book takes readers on a wild safari. Lively verses introduce young readers to several familiar jungle inhabitants; bear, monkey, elephant, leopard, and snake, while the inclusion of a vulture adds an exotic touch. Divided into two sections, the first half of the verse describes movements of an animal. "Down in the jungle where the leaves lie deep, / What can you see learning how to leap? . . ." Readers turn the page to discover the animal and the second part of the verse. "IT'S A LEOPARD / She goes leap, leap, boogie, woogie, oogie! / Leap, leap, boogie, woogie, oogie! / Leap, leap, boogie, woogie, oogie! / That's the way she's learning how to leap." The song trots along at sprightly pace; however, speakers may find themselves (or at least their voices) boogie woogied out by the final animal. Harter's brilliantly colored illustrations are an exuberant extension of the tale. Bright watercolors bring the jungle to life in a riot of vivid hues. A full-bleed, two-page spread accompanies each section of verse. Harter cleverly incorporates the featured animal, partially obscured by the greenery, into the illustration for the guessing portion of the song, providing readers with a visual clue. Her array of multicultural and differently-abled children all partake enthusiastically in the fun, as each section depicts an inquisitive child searching for and later dancing along with the featured animal. A rambunctious read-aloud that is sure to get listeners on their feet and dancing to the beat. A musical score is included.
