Overview

Most of this 1997 CD is taken from a Regal LP; a few additional titles were released previously by the 77 label. Back in 1968, cornetist Dick Sudhalter and pianist Henry "Thins" Francis, both Americans, visited England and formed a group with some of the top local talent (including John R.T. Davies on reeds and trombone), which was soon dubbed the Anglo-American Alliance. Sudhalter's Bix Beiderbecke-influenced cornet is the lead voice on most of the selections, but all the members of the nonet (which also includes Alan Cooper on clarinet and bass clarinet, Jim Shepherd on trombone and bass sax, Ray Whittam on bass sax and alto clarinet, a four-piece rhythm section, and some excellent vocals from Chris Ellis) are excellent. The material is a cross section of mostly late-'20s songs, and the arrangements are both inventive and fresh. The delightful set has among its many highlights "Doin' the New Low Down," "I've Got a Feeling I'm Falling," "You're the Cream in My Coffee," a somewhat bizarre treatment of "Davenport Blues," "Prince of Wails," and "My Melancholy Baby." Well worth several listens and easily recommended to trad and classic jazz fans. ~ Scott Yanow
