About the Author

Antonino Cavallaro graduated with a degree in Medicine from Catania University, where he also obtained his post-graduate diploma in general surgery. He then spent a period as a visiting fellow at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, USA. In 1984 he was appointed as a Full Professor of Surgery at the University of Rome “Sapienza”, and later Head of the Department of Surgery “P. Valdoni” and of the 1st Postgraduate Training in General Surgery. He is also an Honorary Professor of Complutense University, Madrid, Spain and an Honorary Consultant for the Military Hospital “Celio” in Rome. He is author of more than 500 journal articles and several books.

Description: This book is a comprehensive and detailed evaluation of popliteal artery aneurysms. It begins with a detailed history of the disease from ancient times to modern day practice. It goes into the development/embryology of the disease process, the pathology, diagnosis and treatment utilizing both open surgical and endovascular approaches, as well as discussing uncommon causes and cases of this disease.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to be a comprehensive review of the history, diagnosis, and treatment of popliteal artery aneurysms. Given the continued improvements in endovascular therapy as well uncommon variants and causes of this disease process, the objectives of this book are worthy. The book exceeds its objectives by being a comprehensive but also enjoyable read that is direct and straight to the point, while utilizing top-notch international publications for references.
Audience: This book is made for surgical residents and practitioners in the field of vascular surgery. It is written appropriately for its target audience. The author is an internationally recognized retired academic vascular surgeon with several notable contributions and publications in the field. He has over 50 years of surgical experience and has dealt with all aspects of this disease process throughout his extensive and accomplished career.
Features: The most notable feature I enjoyed is the detailed history and evaluation of popliteal artery aneurysms, going back to ancient Egypt and Greece to the present day. The thoroughly researched areas of the ancient and modern history and thought processes of the greatest physicians of their day in treating this disease process tracks well within the progress of the modernization of medicine and surgery through the ages. One cannot help but appreciate the level of academic discourse and communication between the great surgeons even centuries ago, and how the treatment of disease was not by great leaps and bounds in technology, but by a stepwise progression of refinement in experimentation and technique on an international scale from generations of the historical great surgeons. This well-cited book, complete with clear illustrations and concise language, makes for a quick read. It also well encompasses the more recent literature on open versus endovascular repair of popliteal artery aneurysms. Certain sections of the book are included to be comprehensive but seem less clinically relevant as they seem to have only a small association with popliteal artery aneurysms, such as the section about Kawasaki disease or HIV/AIDS and popliteal aneurysms.
Assessment: This book is a well-written, well-illustrated, and comprehensive guide to popliteal artery aneurysms. Being in the field, I found it to be a very useful resource, especially in aberrant cases (such as popliteal entrapment syndrome or persistent sciatic artery) which are well illustrated and described in this book. It also includes a very comprehensive summary of the historical aspects and treatments of this disease, which I found to be the most definitive and authoritative compared to any other textbook I have read previously.
