Finding blues empress Bessie Smith in the mix is a pleasant surprise, and her presence is provocatively complimented by Billie Holiday, Ethel Waters, Ivie Anderson, and Mildred Bailey. The range of talent represented here is quite impressive, as Ella Fitzgerald, Martha Tilton, Helen Forrest, Connee Boswell, Lena Horne, and Lee Wiley meet Peggy Lee, Jo Stafford, Chris Connor, June Christy, Rosemary Clooney, Margaret Whiting, Helen O'Connell, Kitty Kallen, Judy Garland, Dinah Shore, and Doris Day. The modern end of the spectrum is powerfully personified by Helen Merrill, Julie London, Anita O'Day, Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae, and Dinah Washington.
