Ancient Egypt, by Kathleen W. Deady (Capstone Press, 2004), is an informative resource written for children. This book is part of a series that includes Ancient China, Rome, and Greece. Photographs, drawings, and paintings from a variety of sources illustrate the large text. At the end of each book is a timeline with the significant events of the culture’s history marked. A glossary follows as well as listings of other resources such as Internet sites, books, and museums. Simple ideas and language make it possible for students ages eight and up to make use of this book on their own.

Each book covers an ancient civilization that is often included in the upper elementary or middle school social studies curriculum. Pages are highlighted with drawings and photographs of artifacts as well as maps illustrating the extent of each civilization. An occasional fact box is added. The weakest chapters are those that name assorted emperors and rulers in textbook fashion with little interesting information. The strongest chapters cover major achievements and lasting influence of the civilization. Also successfully presented is information about the early beginnings of each civilization. The books are useful to the third grader who wants to read about an ancient civilization, to the struggling eighth grade reader doing research. Recommended.

Gr 3–5—Four sequential chapters outlining the history of each civilization are introduced by a "you-are-there" anecdote: a chariot race at the Olympic Games, the opening of King Tut's tomb, a caravan traveling the Silk Road. Short sections, informative captions, fact boxes, and highlighted definitions offer readers a variety of access points.
