Description: This extensively revised and updated review of anatomic pathology includes many new questions as well as a multifaceted and expanded online version. New contributors have joined this edition, providing expertise in their respective subspecialty areas, and the book now has over 40 contributors. The first edition was published in 2006.
Purpose: The main goal is to provide pathology residents who are preparing for the board examination in anatomic pathology a comprehensive, representative, and amply illustrated set of questions and answers covering the major diagnostic subspecialties in the field. The authors have achieved their stated goals.
Audience: This book is intended primarily for anatomic pathology residents, but practicing pathologists who are preparing for the recertifying examination in anatomic pathology will also find it very useful.
Features: The first 20 of the book's 24 chapters cover different organ systems and subspecialty areas in anatomic pathology including cardiac, vascular, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, pancreas, liver, salivary gland, renal, genitourinary, gynecologic, breast, bone and joint, skin, muscle and peripheral nerve, soft tissue, and thyroid and parathyroid gland pathology, as well as neuropathology, hematopathology, infectious diseases pathology, and pediatric and placental pathology. Forensic pathology is covered in a separate chapter. Two chapters are dedicated to immunopathology and molecular diagnostic pathology, respectively. The last chapter covers cytopathology. The book is structured as a series of multiple-choice questions that cover all important aspects of anatomic pathology. Answers to the questions are provided at the end of each chapter, along with a discussion that provides readers with the most important take home messages. Several pertinent references are provided after each answer. Some answers include useful tables that nicely complement the text. Gross or microscopic images are incorporated into most questions and the overall quality of the images is excellent. The index is well constructed and useful.
Assessment: This excellent review is a must have for anybody preparing for the anatomic pathology board examination. The examination serves as an instrument to measure breadth of knowledge and standard of care training in anatomic pathology and, therefore, is an essential part of the training of all pathology residents. Preparing for the board examination can be stressful and overwhelming, since the field is large and rapidly changing. This book provides a great review, covering all important aspects of anatomic pathology in a format that is easy to digest and, more importantly, is used on the actual board examination. In the almost 10 years since the first edition was published, there have been striking advances in genomic and molecular medicine with an enormous impact on the field of diagnostic pathology. The authors have done an excellent job of incorporating new and pertinent information into this edition. This book should be on the shelf of every anatomic pathology resident. It is also highly recommended for practicing pathologists who are preparing for the recertifying examination.
