About the Author

Donald W. Jonz a/k/a Donald Wheeler Jones has been a practicing attorney on the trial and appellate levels. He was the first Afro-American Judge to preside in an integrated Municipal Court in Miami, Florida. He was a Deputy Assistant United States Attorney General, as the Deputy Director of the U.S. Community Relations Service. He was Deputy Director of the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia. He was, most recently, an Assistant Dean for Multiculturalism and an Associate Professor at Florida Coastal School of Law. He and his wife currently reside in the Washington, D.C. area.

Hip, hip hooray for this book! We British have to be careful about meddling into the affairs of Americans, but I sincerely feel that this book should be mandatory reading for all public schools and every member of the American Congress and Senate. It is non-threatening, non-insulting, and fabulously constructive!

I sincerely hope that Americans will read this book because it appeals to reason rather than emotions. There are times in the book when you will agree with Dean completely and then, in the next few pages, find oneself in agreement with Don. One can almost feel betrayed when they agree on something. It was an intellectual roller coaster ride that had substance and eloquently expressed, opposing, points of view.

From a British point of view, I think this book is the most refreshing look at the mentality of an intellectual person of color in America that I have read. It does not express a fixed point of view, but rather explores the subject of race relations and progress in America from a balanced perspective. It contributes enormously to the understanding of the plight of African Americans. Yet, it is undoubtedly a helpful book that left me with optimism.
