Overview

High school sophomore Amy Dowd frets when she feels that she is caught between the demands of two of her favorite high school activities – softball and band. She has just made the varsity softball team when she is forced to choose between a band trip and traveling to a game against a rival school. She faces up to the challenge of confronting the coach who has a reputation for being tough on any girl who does not abide by her rules. Little does Amy know that her choice to travel with the band to a competition will end with her being caught in an even worse predicament.

Loosely based on an actual incident, the story describes the pressure faced by a high school girl who is witness to an abusive relationship and believes that she cannot stay silent. Her family supports her and some members of the school staff take her claims seriously, but the victim and the abuser and even part of the community try to intimidate Amy to silence her.

Even when she senses she is being stalked by the abuser and after being harassed at school, Amy is determined to go through with testifying before the school board in support of the principal’s decision to discipline the boy who assaulted the other girl. The outcome hinges on whether the victim can finally accept the courageous stand taken by Amy Dowd as an example that must be followed to free herself from the relationship.
