The story of Cupid and Psyche is an episode of the ancient novel “Der goldene Esel” (The Golden Donkey) written in the 2nd century and is told by a foolish and drunken woman. The author utilizes a copious amount of irony and treats the ancient gods relatively disrespectful. “Reader, you will have fun!” it says in the beginning of the book.
