Purpose: The objective is to provide the foundational component of a comprehensive course offering a unique "think outside the box" process designed to strengthen and refine the assessment and diagnostic skills of prehospital practitioners while incorporating evidence-based information. This is a worthy objective and the presentation in both a book and online format enhances the delivery of the information.
Audience: The audience is students and practitioners who provide prehospital care for patients, primarily EMS practitioners, paramedics, and physicians/residents. The title meets the needs of the intended audience.
Features: The book presents current basic and advanced treatment modalities incorporating the latest research developments. Critical thinking scenarios provide context for the application of the information presented, which helps readers assess, review, and discern the diagnosis. Chapter review questions, summaries, and the "Putting It All Together" sections reinforce key concepts and tie information together to help retention of the information.
Assessment: This is a fairly thorough overview of the pathophysiology, presenting signs/symptoms, differential diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of many common and uncommon problems likely to occur in prehospital patients. It is thorough enough for the stabilization and initial therapy of prehospital patients. The book and online resources complement each other and foster learning and memorizing of the material.
