American Values: Lessons I Learned from My Family

With rich detail, compelling honesty, and a storyteller's gift, RFK Jr. describes growing up Kennedy in a tumultuous time in history that eerily echoes the issues of nuclear confrontation, religion, race, and inequality that we confront today.

This powerful book combines the best aspects of memoir and political history. The third child of Attorney General Robert Kennedy and nephew of JFK takes us on a journey through his life, including watershed moments in the history of our nation.

These pages come vividly to life with intimate stories of RFK Jr.'s own experiences, not just with historical events and the movers who shaped them, but also with his mother and father, his own struggles with addiction, and the ways he eventually made peace with both his Kennedy legacy and his own demons. The result is a book that is remarkably stirring and relevant, providing both insight and hope for all Americans at a time when they are needed like never before.

JANUARY 2019 - AudioFile

Narrator Stephen Graybill doesn't deliver Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.'s, story of growing up in a political family with a Boston accent, but the author's personality manages to show through. Graybill creates a feeling of Hyannisport as paradise as Kennedy recalls how he grew up with an appreciation of nature even as government figures and celebrities visited regularly. He tells the story of a visit by Green Berets with childlike glee. Most of Kennedy's family is mentioned, but he concentrates on his uncle, President John F. Kennedy, and his father, a senator and attorney general. His pride comes through as he talks about their positions on Vietnam, civil rights, nuclear tests, and the Mafia. Kennedy avoids family gossip, but he's candid about his own drug use and once-icy relationship with his mother. J.A.S. © AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine

Global Research

Part memoir, part family history, part astute political analysis, and part-confessional, it is in turns delightful, sad, funny, fierce, and frightening in its implications.  [American Values] is imbued with the spirit of the eloquent, romantic Irish-Catholic rebels whose fighting spirit and jaunty demeanor the Kennedy family has exemplified.  RFK, Jr. tells his tales in words that honor that literary and spiritual tradition.
