Overview

The first of three LPs featuring altoist Captain John Handy, this heated set also includes some relative youngsters (clarinetist Sammy Rimington, pianist Bill Sinclair, banjoist Dick Griffith and bassist Dick McCarthy), plus three other veterans (trumpeter Kid Thomas Valentine, trombonist Jim Robinson and drummer Sammy Penn). While there are some spirited ensembles, along with solo space for the other horns, Handy quickly emerges as the main star. His heated alto (an unusual ingredient in New Orleans jazz) is heard in top form on his trademark "Hindustan," "Who's Sorry Now," "I Can't Escape From You," "Washington and Lee Swing," and a blues. Fun music. ~ Scott Yanow
