About the Author

Glendon L. Moriarty, PsyD, is a licensed psychologist and an Associate Professor in the School of Psychology and Counseling at Regent University, where he supervises doctoral level trainees, teaches, and conducts research on psychodynamic psychotherapy and the psychology of religion. Dr. Moriarty is the author of Pastoral Care of Depression: Helping Clients Heal Their Emotional Experience of God. He has published articles, chapters, and presented on the integration of psychology and spirituality, the psychology of religion, and psychology and technology. In addition, he is the founder of the God Image Institute (www.godimage.com) the first agency in the country dedicated to helping people change their emotional experience of God. He was awarded multiple times for his contributions, receiving the Leadership Award, Fellowship Award, and being named among the Who's Who of Universities and Colleges. He is a member of the American Psychological Association, the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion, and the Christian Association for Psychological Studies.

Louis Hoffman, PhD, is a core faculty member at the Colorado School of Professional Psychology, the Editor-in-Chief of the Colorado School of Professional Psychology Press, and an adjunct faculty at the Graduate School of Psychology at Fuller Theological Seminary. Description: This collection of journal articles summarizes screening for substance use disorders, then applies the concept of brief intervention to those identified as being at risk. This entire collection was copublished simultaneously as a supplement to the journal Substance Abuse, Volume 28, Number 3 and Number 4, 2007.
Purpose: The purpose is to summarize the concept of screening and brief intervention in the treatment of substance use disorders, and to provide evidence that these techniques work. These are certainly worthy objectives, given the prevalence of substance use disorders.
Audience: The authors imply that the intended audience is anyone or any organization (e.g. hospitals, mental health clinics) that might treat a population at risk for substance use disorders. In my opinion, addictionologists and substance abuse counselors would find the collection most useful.
Features: This collection of articles is grouped into three parts: an overview of screening and brief intervention; assessment and how these techniques work; and examples of where these techniques have been applied. This third part will probably be the most useful to clinicians/counselors; the article "Brief Alcohol Interventions and Multiple Risk Factors in Primary Care" was, I thought, particularly informative. Numerous references are provided at the end of each article. There are no illustrations, but tables are scattered throughout. At the front of the book is a very useful section listing major indexing and abstracting services and websites for bibliographic access. An index ends the book.
Assessment: As someone who finds reading journal articles somewhat monotonous, I must admit that this is a rather useful and very interesting book. The idea of using quick and simple screening tools to identify patients at risk for substance abuse, then applying the brief intervention techniques as discussed in the various articles, is very important. Screening and brief intervention is a highly promising technique for treatment of these high morbidity and mortality disorders.
