Purpose: The purpose is to review the effects of alcohol use on various types of accidents. It focuses primarily on alcohol's role in automobile, aviation, and aquatic injuries. A significant part of the text is devoted to reviewing the literature regarding prevention strategies. A small chapter is devoted to reviewing the sparse literature regarding cocaine injures.
Audience: This book appears to be geared to a wide audience. It is a must to understand the most significant ramifications alcohol use has on our society. Individuals who work with an alcohol-abusing population or are involved in public health or policymaking in this area should be familiar with this book. The authors and editors are clearly experts in the field of alcoholism.
Features: The text is somewhat underillustrated with limited tables or charts. The references are extensive, relevant, and up-to-date.
Assessment: This is a good book that brings together a significant amount of information in the area of alcohol related injuries and prevention strategies. It is not complete and does not cover all related areas regarding this topic. The information in the chapters overlaps to some degree. In addition, only a small chapter was actually devoted to cocaine. Yet, the information is important and extremely relevant.
