Introduction

How to Use This Handbook

When trouble is experienced with a particular type of equipment, turn to the troubleshooting chart for that type of unit in Chapter 7, Troubleshooting Charts. The action of the unit can then be found in the column labeled condition. The next column lists the possible cause for the problem encountered. The third column lists the corrective action that may be taken to correct the problem. The reference column directs the reader to the specific sections in Chapter 2 and/or Chapter 3 where the component is introduced and where checkout procedures for the component are given. Specific procedures described in Chapter 4, "Standard Service Procedures," will help the beginner in accomplishing any unfamiliar tasks.

Example: You are having trouble with a refrigeration unit. After checking the unit you find that the compressor fails to start (no hum). All the fans are running and the lights are on. When you refer to the troubleshooting chart on Refrigeration, the first three possible causes are readily checked -and there is electrical power to the unit. The fourth possible cause is a burned-out compressor motor—somewhat more difficult to diagnose. The fourth corrective action indicates a replacement is in order. The reference column indicates the specific sections in the text where the proper procedure for this job is discussed. The specific sections are: Chapter 2, Sections 4-l; 4-2A, B, C, and D. Chapter 4 will provide additional information on changing burned-out compressor motors.

Also included in this handbook are start-up procedures for different types of units (Chapter 3), representative wiringdiagrams for some types of equipment (Chapter 5), safety procedures (Chapter 6), and engineering data including charts and tables of useful information (Chapters 7 & 8).
