Overview

This publication deals with ancient Egyptian amulets excavated since 2005 in Israel/Palestine. It also presents objects excavated earlier but which were missing or previously inaccessible to the author. To make the catalogue complete, the volume further includes amulets kept in museums or private collections in Israel or Europe. The plates show all Egyptian amulets found in Israel/Palestine since 1898 and accessible to the author (a total of 3239 items). They provide a systematic overview of the repertoire of Egyptian amulets from Israel/Palestine, dating from the Late Bronze age to the Roman period. The main emphasis is on the visual presentation of the amulets, the interpretation of archaeological data and the systematic comparison with selected amulets from the wider Mediterranean area (Egypt, the north-eastern Mediterranean coast, Asia Minor, Cyprus, Rhodes, Malta, Greece, Old Italy, Sardinia, Ibiza, Iberia and Carthage). Alongside Othmar Keels Corpus of stamp seal amulets, also published in OBO Series Archaeologica, this is one of the very rare publications which can claim comprehensive coverage of a particular class of archaeological artefacts from Israel/Palestine.
